Eduardo Contreras Tennis Champ

The Valley’s #1 High School Tennis Player is…

Eduardo Contreras Our Tennis Champ.

A story of resiliency…one that shows the true heart of a champion. A reminder that when your mind is set, and you’ve prepared like no other, victory is attainable! The story of resiliency has been the reality for Eduardo Contreras. Eduardo recently represented Desert Hot Springs High during the league tennis championships. Tonight at the City Council meeting, Eduardo received an award from Mayor Matas for his excellence on the tennis court. A notable feat on its own, but when coupled with the fact that he dethroned the 4 year perennial champ Rancho Mirage High, you really get a sense of just how special this victory was. However, that’s not the complete story…

Eduardo played through league championship matches with holes in his shoes and played the entire season with borrowed tennis rackets. He appeared to approach the season with a mindset that nothing would stand in his way! When asked about his focus, he told the Desert Sun, “Last year, I came in fourth [place], but this year I came back with some redemption…” Despite the fact that he has only played competitive tennis for a year, our champion now stands at the top of the league and considered to be the favorite heading into his senior year.

I had a chance to catch up with Eduardo to ask a couple of questions concerning his historic championship run. When asked about his choice for collegiate athletics, he quickly replied that UCLA would be his school of choice. Next, I asked him when did he realize that he was on to something great? His reply, “I started to realize I was a good tennis player when I noticed I [had] surpassed my teammates that I thought were “good”. Suddenly, he said, he recognized that his gift had gone to “another level.”

“My victory had a great impact on our city because no one was expecting a kid from Desert Hot Springs to win the championship….it put our city up there with the others [in the valley]; it put Desert Hot Springs on the map”, he declared.

One thing is for certain, the city that sits on the hill has a champion that’s positioned as a force to be reckoned with next year.
