DHS is Home to Angel View

Angel View
In a growing city, employment opportunities are always in demand. Many may not realize that with 12 residential homes, a daily intake facility, a thrift store, and a clearance center, that Angel View is our city’s largest employer. Patricia Myers serves as the communications manager and was extremely eager to give me a tour of a couple of their sites.
The tour began at the adult day care facility located at 12379 Miracle Hill Road. It was here that I was introduced to their slogan, “Many faces, many places.” Upon entering, I was greeted with a warm welcome by the receptionist and was immediately impressed with the presentation of the lobby area. The goal is simple, “To help children and adults reach THEIR maximum potential”. Walking through the hall, I marveled at how each classroom had a different clientele and activity. From Zumba to creative art and everything in between, there was a well rounded approach to growth for all. Site manager Johnny Gamez listed the daily routine for the site. On a daily basis clients are presented with physical fitness (Zumba/basketball/gym activities), cognitive development, social skills, cooking classes, independent skill courses, arts and crafts, and karaoke!!! This therapeutic day program has been in existence for nearly 10 years and a work development program is currently in the works. Mr. Gamez stated that currently there are 85 clients and they still have capacity for 20 more.
With a growing base, and increasing need, our city’s largest employer is “always hiring” and continuing to look for volunteers. After 65 years in Desert Hot Springs, Angel View is constantly in growth mode. One interesting factoid about the name Angel View, “From this (Miracle Hill) facility way back when… early in the morning, you would see the view/reflection of an angelic image right over that mountain.”
The highlight of my visit here? So many to choose from, but I must say the huge hug I received form Marlina has to take the cake!!! Marlina is a 39 year old young lady who moved into an angel view home nearly 2 years ago. Diagnosed with Down Syndrome, she has transformed in many ways because of the quality care and programming at Angel View. After losing 90 pounds with the help of the staff dieticians, she showed her new figure at the annual talent show and was the queen of the prom!
Next, I was invited to take a tour of one of the residential facilities. These homes offer 24 hour residential care with unique and distinctive floor plans to meet the needs of the clients. However, the quality of the home itself pales in comparison to the stories of some of the residents. I met the most remarkable man that day, in that home. Peter Li has Muscular Dystrophy and is bound to a wheel chair. However, the man has no limits. He is a published author, with a book available for sale on Amazon (Fueled by Misery- GO GET IT!), and is one of the most positive people I have ever met. He typed his manuscript using a specially designed track pad in the corner of the frame of his glasses. With subtle and precise head movements, the track pad connected the keystrokes on the screen and after 17 long years, his book was completed. Talk about commitment!!
Finally, it should be celebrated that our local schools have teamed up with Angel View on a special community art collaboration. As part of our City’s Art in Public Places initiative, 13 young artists now have their artwork affixed at the entry of the new clearance center located at 64669 Dillon Road.

They truly have a heart for the city of Desert Hot Springs and we are grateful to have them here. Please view the video below to discover more of Angel View.
