Our Tennis Champ has RETURNED!!!!

The Champ is HERE!!!
The champ is here! Eduardo Contreras shocked the valley last year when he became the league champion. Representing Desert Hot Springs High with pride, Eduardo is now a senior, and is eager to defend his title. A few months back I was able to catch up with him to discuss his amazing feat. By that time, the Desert Sun and City Hall had already recognized his achievements. However, in spite of the fact that he had been recently celebrated, I found him to be refreshingly grounded and focused on the next season and his collegiate goals. This week, we revisit Eduardo as he prepares for his final season of prep tennis.
If you recall, last year Eduardo competed through league championship matches using borrowed tennis rackets while wearing shoes that were falling apart. Nevertheless, he focused and persevered by reflecting on his 4th place finish the year before. He explained, “Last year, I came in fourth [place], but this year I came back with some redemption…”

The tennis star had a few minutes to answer the following questions:

What are your goals this year ?
• “My goals for this year are to enhance my tennis [skills] and to become the best tennis player I can be. I [aim to] win the De Anza league tournament and [earn] a scholarship to play tennis for a school. It would be a wish come true if I’d be able to go to college with a purpose.”

It should be noted that he’s driven to succeed even at the next level!

You are a senior…what are your college plans? Have they changed from UCLA?
• “My college [choices] are the same, UCLA has a Division 1 tennis team and i would love to represent UCLA and play a sport I love.”
How does it feel to be the champ of the Valley ?
• “Becoming the champion of the Valley was a big accomplishment in my life [and] I’m very proud of myself. I am happy people look up to me and believe they can do something they love and be good at it.”
Are you ready for everyone to be shooting for you?
• “I’m ready for tennis season to start because I have seen a difference already since last season and how I’m playing today. I feel confident i will make my school and city proud.”Keep up with Eduardo and the DHS High Tennis program by following their Facebook page. Eduardo! Thank you for representing us well! The champ is HERE!

A Teacher’s Perspective & Beyond!

By Kephyan Sheppard | June 28, 2020

As the 2nd semester of the school year got underway, I’m sure most of our educators were beginning to set plans for the summer. Vacations, completing ‘to do’ lists, and rest were more than likely prioritized. Fast forward to March, and COVID19 became the dominant thought, causing many of them to scrap lesson plans and…

This Graduating Class is Something Special!

By Kephyan Sheppard | May 23, 2020

As we shift gears and begin to prepare for the return of some normalcy, it can’t be understated enough that for some normal may never return. For some the opportunity to take part in once-in-a-lifetime events has been taken away. Our graduation plans, especially for our high school students have unfortunately become casualties to unintended…

A week ago, our website received anonymous note asking if I would address COVID-19 and the outpouring of fear and concern that has swept throughout our city. With the increasing numbers of those affected…

Watch Them Soar: DHS High

By Kephyan Sheppard | February 8, 2020

DHS High should be celebrated! Not only because it’s a great school, but because of the innovative approaches that Principal Cota and her staff employ daily.
