Our Tennis Champ has RETURNED!!!!

The Champ is HERE!!!
The champ is here! Eduardo Contreras shocked the valley last year when he became the league champion. Representing Desert Hot Springs High with pride, Eduardo is now a senior, and is eager to defend his title. A few months back I was able to catch up with him to discuss his amazing feat. By that time, the Desert Sun and City Hall had already recognized his achievements. However, in spite of the fact that he had been recently celebrated, I found him to be refreshingly grounded and focused on the next season and his collegiate goals. This week, we revisit Eduardo as he prepares for his final season of prep tennis.
If you recall, last year Eduardo competed through league championship matches using borrowed tennis rackets while wearing shoes that were falling apart. Nevertheless, he focused and persevered by reflecting on his 4th place finish the year before. He explained, “Last year, I came in fourth [place], but this year I came back with some redemption…”

The tennis star had a few minutes to answer the following questions:

What are your goals this year ?
• “My goals for this year are to enhance my tennis [skills] and to become the best tennis player I can be. I [aim to] win the De Anza league tournament and [earn] a scholarship to play tennis for a school. It would be a wish come true if I’d be able to go to college with a purpose.”

It should be noted that he’s driven to succeed even at the next level!

You are a senior…what are your college plans? Have they changed from UCLA?
• “My college [choices] are the same, UCLA has a Division 1 tennis team and i would love to represent UCLA and play a sport I love.”
How does it feel to be the champ of the Valley ?
• “Becoming the champion of the Valley was a big accomplishment in my life [and] I’m very proud of myself. I am happy people look up to me and believe they can do something they love and be good at it.”
Are you ready for everyone to be shooting for you?
• “I’m ready for tennis season to start because I have seen a difference already since last season and how I’m playing today.
