Soroptomist House DHS

What a Grand Opening!
Soroptimist House of Hope, right here in Desert Hot Springs endeavors to help women “establish and maintain sober and healthy lives.” They recently held a grand opening with the Greater Coachella Chamber of Commerce and the welcome I received from all the staff was top notch. I’ve lived here a majority of my life, and was shocked to discover that for over 30 years, they’ve been impacting lives right here in DHS!
“Soroptimist House of Hope is a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to provide recovery programs to women with substance abuse disorders. These women were in need of housing and support to establish clean and sober lifestyles, re-establish their lives, and become productive members of society. We provide residential substance abuse recovery programs for women at our Desert Hot Springs, California Recovery Facility and our Banning, California Transitional Living Home. Since 1981, SHOH has helped thousands of women through a comprehensive and effective social model program offering housing, companionship and guidance, therapeutic activities, and a structured daily routine that enables them to establish and maintain sober and healthy lives.”
Meet Dot Reed, one of the original founders who orchestrated this work in 1981. I asked her about her passion concerning the house and the mission attached to it. She replied, “The house is my passion…… my grandmother told me that what I give, it comes back 100 fold.” Full of class and grace she continued, “However, I give without expecting anything in return!” She then discussed with an amazing honor which was a full featured article written about her in Palm Springs Life entitled, “A Passion For Giving.” It’s a great feeling to know that we have yet another huge heart here in Desert Hot Springs.
According to staff member Trish Klimkiewicz, the Desert Hot Springs Home houses 6 women in a program that lasts anywhere from 45-90 days. Their stay is completely voluntary and while life skills are taught and reinforced, the women contribute to the ‘day to day’ needs of the house. The most beautiful thing? All the staff members are alumni and even the grand opening was hosted by alumni.
We are extremely fortunate to have a Soroptimist House right here in our own backyard. Their mission and values line up to what we know is the true character of our city. This character can be summed up in two short words: WE CARE!
