Resident Perspective- Dirk Voss

Let’s get back to spotlighting some residents. I love doing this because it gives you the opportunity to hear directly from people who call DHS home. This week, we spotlight Mr. Dirk Voss. Dirk is literally one of the friendliest people in the city, and I’ll add that he has the “cool” factor. You an find him working out at our local World ‘s Gym, at city events, and sometimes cruising on his Harley Davidson.
A MAN THAT LOVES HIS CITY
I’ve been a resident here in DHS for seven years. While living in the desert, when I decided to get back into the housing market and purchase a home, after friends of mine recommended DHS, I decided to expand my circle of where to consider buying and looked around DHS – I was excited not only about the dollar to home value I could get, but the type of housing options, the cooler temperatures, the magnificent mile long scenic views and the community pride so many people have in our community for our city.
You’re a man with an impressive resume & leadership experience, why DHS?
I return the question with why not. DHS is the gateway to the Coachella Valley – its the gateway to the Joshua Tree Basin. It has what I believe the most valuable freeway frontage property in the Valley from Indian to Palm – ready for new development and services our residents desire to have near them. The benefits far outweigh the perceived negatives and the opportunities from an economic development point of view are endless. We’re just now beginning to truly take advantage of that which we can see in the many benefits the cannabis industry alone has brought to the city. This alone created the multiplier effect in driving more business opportunities feeding into each other with support services, jobs and creation of new professional opportunities for our residents so they can work locally in town.
The biggest economic development renaissance in the history of DHS occurred over the 2015-2017 years with the approval of the vast new cannabis projects which are in the millions of dollars, jobs and income to the City – I was fortunate enough to be the Chairman of the Planning Commission during this time as projects came up for approval.
What would you say your contribution has been to improving the image of our city ?
When I moved to DHS, I had a sense of ownership beyond just owning a home, it was a sense of ownership in making our community better and excel. I served 4 years on the City’s planning commission(two years as chairman), served on the RDA Successor Agency Oversight Board and served on the Community and Cultural Affairs Commission. I also served as chair & on the board for the Chamber of Commerce, & I’m currently a member of our local Rotary Club & Elks Club.

Over the course of the last few years… our city has improved drastically. What improvements have you seen?

The city has begun to have a shining light on it. We’ve all heard the past, stories and negative things, all of which each city here in the valley have as well. Since then, we’ve seen the foundation of the city rebuilt and lead in a positive direction….
People outside the city are recognizing that this side of the freeway is the new place to be. We have community involvement, community pride, new development ranging from service sectors to industrial to professional locating and investing in our city. New gateway medians, encouragement of beautification in our commercial areas and main corridors, a new city hall coming, a new library coming and broad mix of residents deciding to make DHS their home, a great sense of diversity and community pride and lets not forget the surrounding open space and the vast mountains of the Sand to Snow National Park to our city while bringing in tourism to compliment our hoteliers and the spas and mineral springs that only we here in DHS provide.
“Those are all [of my] reasons to love DHS, to invest in DHS, to become involved in DHS, to raise a family and relocate and take pride in calling DHS home. “- Dirk Voss, Owner of Urban Management Strategies
