Yarn Bombs Make us Smile!!!

“I really want people to interact with my art. It brings me joy when people take photos or post comments about it. I love hearing that it brings a smile to their face. ” – Stephanie Buriel

Drive around Desert Hot Springs and you never know what you’ll see! There was a time years ago where that statement would have carried a negative connotation, but today?? You will notice a blossoming city, beautiful mountains, loving people, and artwork!!! Lately, one of our residents has taken art in public to a new level! Many have inquired about who the artist is, and today we introduce you to Stephanie Buriel! She has become a spark of energy for some of us with her crochet murals (aka yarn bombs) that seem to pop up and surprise us weekly. I was able to catch up with her and discuss her passion for beautifying our city, enjoy!!

“I’m originally from the San Joaquin Valley. I moved to DHS in 2000 and have been here ever since. I learned how to crochet when I was in the Marine Corps. I had a roommate who taught me the basics. Over the years I’ve picked it up off and on. In January I left my job and have been home since. I saw a talk show in which an artist in New York was crocheting much like I am now. I honestly didn’t think much of it but then I started to see previews on TV of The Village. The show had a heart attached to a fence which I really loved. I started to look up other artists doing “yarn bombing/fiber art.” I was inspired by their creations. My brain just started coming up with ideas and I really wanted to make a difference in my community by putting up “yarn bombs.” I wanted to make people smile and to spark joy.”

” I really want people to interact with my art. It brings me joy when people take photos or post comments about it. I love hearing that it brings a smile to their face. My desire is to create something that promotes positivity in the community. As for expanding, there are a few things that I’d like to see happen with yarn bombing. So there will be more art put up throughout the city. Those projects are currently underway and near completion. What I would love to see is for yarn bombing to expand to other communities in the Coachella Valley with DHS leading the pack. I would also like to see a festival held in DHS around yarn bombing/fiber art with other artists involved.”

“I really love the fact that DHS is a supportive community. The people here care about each other. My boys grew up here and they can’t go anywhere without running into someone they know. It is so easy for people outside the community to make judgements based on negativity about DHS. I’ve lived here for a long time and love that we have a lot of people that live here who care about DHS and its residents.”
