Hope Scott and the SPH Creative Arts Club!!!

Our youth are not only our future, but they’re our present. Here in DHS we encourage, promote, and celebrate those who champion causes to encourage and pour into our kids. Hope Scott is one of the leaders of the SPH Creative Arts Club. This program is one of a few that go above and beyond to ensure that our next generation is equipped to lead our city further into greatness. The club endeavors to secure peace and hope for the children of Desert Hot Springs through the inspiring power of creativity and the discipline of the fine arts. Hope answered a few questions for me concerning the program, enjoy!

Our mission for the Creative Arts Mentoring Club is to use the power of imagination and therapy to inspire our youth. Our loving support to empower and to bring a voice to the “at-promised” youth (formerly known as the at-risk youth) of DHS from the ages of 6-14. We aim to help them to cope with challenges and ultimately grow to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring individuals.

A quick glance at the program class offerings will allow you to appreciate the efforts of the SPH club as they continue to expose our youth to a variety of activities. Here are a few of their class offerings:

· “Can you hear me?” “This class sets the standard of all our other classes”, Hope commented. The class allows the facilitator to hear what is troubling the child and how they feel about certain words in everyday life.

· Culinary arts: This class helps to teach cooking in a healthy manner. Hope commented, ” Hopefully someday I will be able to teach all of the different types of food groups.”.. This class will empower our youth to explore options in the culinary industry.

· We also offer the following classes:
o Dance
o Music
o Drama
o Photography

“We enable kids to express themselves through movement, color, sound, and texture. We have found that these [methods] are inherently therapeutic and researchers have confirmed that there are a multitude of benefits from starting this process in early developmental years. All of our kids at least get a solid foundation of cultural literacy and gain some momentum on a path of lifelong learning as creative beings. Most of them are very loyal, often attending for multiple years and eventually achieving mastery over a chosen art form, and sometimes becoming a mentor themselves. That is the ultimate affirmation that our program works sustainably and makes a lasting impact in the lives of our children and in our community,” Hope Scott.

We thank you for pouring into our children and for Advancing DHS!!
