A City of Champions Once Again!!!

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote concerning our two MMA world champions Shaniyah Carlson and Andrea Frisque. These are the two homegrown young ladies who took their talents to Rome, Italy and competed on the world stage. As previously mentioned, we are proud to say that the world champ (Shaniyah) resides in DHS! Additionally, the silver medalist (Andrea, who from what I’ve been told lost a controversial fight) also resides right here in DHS. Both train under Sensei Eddie Bates and this week, I wanted us to hear from them!

“Standing on the world stage, winning first place meant everything to me. All of my time I have dedicated to my training, with coaches, teammates, family & friends all there to support me along this journey of mine. Being up there just showed all of my hard work is finally starting to pay off and I’m making my dreams become reality! But that’s not the end of it, I will continue to train and better myself day after day to go back and do my best to win again next year. I believe that this meant alot for my city, Desert Hot Springs! I have lived here my whole life and with everyone always giving DHS such a bad reputation it just shows that there is also a lot of good coming out. I know I made a lot of people in my city very proud, and this win wasn’t just for myself and my team. It was for my city, my people! So I hope they are as happy as I am to share this win, being world champion.” Shaniyah Carlson

“It felt amazing to be able to stand on that stage and represent being 2nd best in the world in my weight division. I fought two amazing and hardworking opponents that definitely gave me a new experience and helped me to learn many things. Even though I [injured my foot], it was all worth it because I had the time of my life in Rome.”

“Being able to represent the United States was a really neat experience, but what makes it [even better] is that we are from a small town, and we represented DHS. It’s a crazy thing to think about, that two small girls from a small town competed in a world event in Rome, Italy.  [This proves that] We all have potential; we just need to set our minds to it and strive forward towards our goals”
– Andrea Frisque

It goes without saying, but we are proud of our champions!!!!!!!
