What a beautiful time to be in DHS!!! The summer season is coming to a close, our version of Friday Night Lights will kickoff soon as our Golden Eagle Football team will soon take the field, and of course our beautiful view hiking trails will be prime for enjoyment. This week I asked a simple question across all of our social media platforms, “Why do YOU love DHS?” This is the 3rd time I have done this, but the responses this time around were too good not to share!!! Here is part 1:

“I love Desert Hot Springs because no matter how many people try to tear us down, at our core, we are a community of solutions oriented people that always seems to rise up to meet a challenge no matter the size. Whether it be a lost animal, a stolen item or a family in need, at the end of the day, this community always seems to come together. No matter who we are, where we came from or what we have, (or do not have) we consistently step up to help each other in times of need. There is a common saying, “It takes a village”, and DHS continues to be a “Village” I am proud to call my home”- Kevin Marshall

“Small town feeling with room to grow. There is a togetherness of the community I didn’t feel when living in Palm Springs. Affordability and size of the house I had in DHS is what brought me out there and happy with the outcome. Amazing people really step up for each other when the going gets tough. Sports programs like Little League, Junior All American Football and AYSO Soccer are all top notch in my opinion as my kids participated in younger years. DHSHS has award winning Marching Band, REAL Academy and JRROTC.” -Connie Chambers

“Being able to own a large beautiful home brought me here. The people keep me here. I have never experienced such kind, supportive, generous people that I have met here. Oh, and the mineral spas have become a large part of my life, and attract lots of visiting company. But that was just an unexpected bonus.” Victoria Doyle

“I love dhs because the people are so awesome. My family and I moved here from Baltimore in 201, and the first thing I heard was how bad it was. Now, coming from the hood of Baltimore I’ve seen the bad and this isn’t it!!! My kids have met some great friends, I’ve made so friends that are now my sisters, and they support for new business owners(me) and everyone else is so humbling.” – “Shannon Mone’a

Community is defined as, “A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common, a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” Reading the responses above and others that I will share with you within the coming weeks, you can see for yourself that DHS isn’t just a zip code, we are a community!!!

“The heart that gives thanks is a happy one, for we cannot feel thankful and unhappy at the same time.” Douglas Wood As we prepare to enter the holiday season, we have plenty of reasons to be thankful. We may not experience all four seasons like other regions, but I believe that we are all excited! After over 100 days of triple degree temperatures, we are finally experiencing a cool off! Soon and very soon, we will begin to see snow caps on our mountains!

With our amazing views, spacious floor plans, and great value with our home prices, one would say that the housing market here in our city is prime for great deals. We haven’t spoken to a realtor in a while, but I caught up with one of our local realtors, Natasha Howard. The question was simple,…

I am a realist. Although I operate with a high sense of optimism, I am a realist. It has been said that some of us see the city of Desert Hot Springs through rose colored glasses, and that we are ignorant to the things that are not so pleasant about our city. That cannot be…

From Dr. Sandra Lyon

As previously stated, our students have returned to school. However, due to COVID protocols, they have returned to school virtually. Virtual learning has proven to be a challenge, and from the responses we have received, everyone is adjusting. I recently reached out to our District Superintindent for additional perspective: “As we begin the year in…

A Teacher’s Perspective & Beyond!

By Kephyan Sheppard | June 28, 2020

As the 2nd semester of the school year got underway, I’m sure most of our educators were beginning to set plans for the summer. Vacations, completing ‘to do’ lists, and rest were more than likely prioritized. Fast forward to March, and COVID19 became the dominant thought, causing many of them to scrap lesson plans and…

This Graduating Class is Something Special!

By Kephyan Sheppard | May 23, 2020

As we shift gears and begin to prepare for the return of some normalcy, it can’t be understated enough that for some normal may never return. For some the opportunity to take part in once-in-a-lifetime events has been taken away. Our graduation plans, especially for our high school students have unfortunately become casualties to unintended…

From ’91-96, I lived here in DHS for the final year of middle school and a majority of my High School Years. I was one of many students who were transported via public transportion from our city to Raymond Cree Middle and Palm Springs High. I may be dating myself, but my school years as…
