We may not experience all four seasons like other regions, but I believe that we are all excited! After over 100 days of triple degree temperatures, we are finally experiencing a cool off! Soon and very soon, we will begin to see snow caps on our mountains!

With our amazing views, spacious floor plans, and great value with our home prices, one would say that the housing market here in our city is prime for great deals. We haven’t spoken to a realtor in a while, but I caught up with one of our local realtors, Natasha Howard. The question was simple, “What makes DHS a great place to buy?”

She replied, “On a city by city basis the median price for detached homes continues strong. Desert Hot Springs’s median purchase price has increased over the last 9 years (outpacing Palm Springs, LaQuinta, and Indio) with average median sales prices rising from $85,000 in 2011 to $250,000 in June 2020. I believe Desert Hot Springs offers affordability especially as a first-time buyer. For anyone with a goal and dream of becoming a homeowner Desert Hot Springs offers just that; affordability and pathway to create wealth through real estate”

One of the many unintended consequences of the COVID-19 mandated shutdowns has been the devastation of our performing arts statewide. Being a former “gigging” musician (one who made a living playing at restaurants and night clubs), I know firsthand the struggle. Some nights the tips are great, others not so much. Still, you always found solace in the fact that the next show was coming, and as long as you had an audience, there was a chance to earn. Unfortunately for the better part of this year, any of our local musicians never saw the next show because as of March, most venues were closed for business, taking the stage away. Here in DHS our very own world class musician, pianist Danny Holt continues to do all he can to remain busy . We have written about him twice before, and an exclusive is on the way next month.

I checked in with him earlier this week, to see how we was adjusting. True to form, he is creatively working on ways to keep his fans engaged through his gift of music. When asked how he was remaining productive during the pandemic he replied, “[I am] working on lots of stuff behind the scenes right now, but will announce details in the next month or so for online concerts in the first half of 2021…..Trying to make the most of the online medium, creating really slick performance videos featuring musicians performing in several locations throughout the city. Hoping folks will enjoy the music, and also be reminded of the beauty of our community!”

Danny Holt

He has given so much to us here in DHS. Many of us have heard him play in the series of free concerts around the city and now we have a chance to support him. Head over to his website and check him out! www.dannyholt.net

Finally, the month of November is right around the corner, and this November is a big one. Yes, there is a Presidential election, but there is also an election that will directly impact our city. Now is your time to exercise your voice with your vote. In previous years, it was rather disheartening to see that (after reviewing the numbers) only a small portion of our city voted in the Mayoral and Council races. Let’s do better this time around, let’s get involved. #DHSstanduP

Danny is a musician’s musician!

I am a realist. Although I operate with a high sense of optimism, I am a realist. It has been said that some of us see the city of Desert Hot Springs through rose colored glasses, and that we are ignorant to the things that are not so pleasant about our city. That cannot be…

As previously stated, our students have returned to school. However, due to COVID protocols, they have returned to school virtually. Virtual learning has proven to be a challenge, and from the responses we have received, everyone is adjusting. I recently reached out to our District Superintindent for additional perspective: “As we begin the year in…

A Teacher’s Perspective & Beyond!

By Kephyan Sheppard | June 28, 2020

As the 2nd semester of the school year got underway, I’m sure most of our educators were beginning to set plans for the summer. Vacations, completing ‘to do’ lists, and rest were more than likely prioritized. Fast forward to March, and COVID19 became the dominant thought, causing many of them to scrap lesson plans and…

This Graduating Class is Something Special!

By Kephyan Sheppard | May 23, 2020

As we shift gears and begin to prepare for the return of some normalcy, it can’t be understated enough that for some normal may never return. For some the opportunity to take part in once-in-a-lifetime events has been taken away. Our graduation plans, especially for our high school students have unfortunately become casualties to unintended…

From ’91-96, I lived here in DHS for the final year of middle school and a majority of my High School Years. I was one of many students who were transported via public transportion from our city to Raymond Cree Middle and Palm Springs High. I may be dating myself, but my school years as…

We are in this TOGETHER!!!

By Kephyan Sheppard | March 19, 2020

Admittedly, this edition is a few days late. Several times I began typing and several times what I typed, I deleted. A week ago, our website received anonymous note asking if I would address COVID-19 and the outpouring of fear and concern that has swept throughout our city. With the increasing numbers of those affected…
